LAS VEGAS POLICE - A Las Vegas police officer committed double murder, then suicide around 8:20 this morning.  The off-duty police lieutenant shot his wife and young son with a gun then set his home on fire.  The officer then committed suicide according to Las Vegas Police.
Unofficial reports say the home was owned by Hans Walters.  Neighbors said Hans Walters was a Las Vegas police lieutenant married to a Kathryn Walter, who was a former Las Vegas police officer.  She left the Las Vegas Police Department in 2005 for unknown reasons
According to the latimes.com, a man in his early 50’s called 911 from his home in Boulder City, Nevada around 8:20 a.m.  He told dispatchers that he killed his wife and his son and was planning to set his home on fire.  Dispatchers also said that he stated that he would harm any responding officers according to a spokesman for the Henderson Police Department.  Officials said the age of the boy was about 7 years old.
When Las Vegas Police arrived at the scene, they saw a middle aged man brandishing what appeared to be a handgun in the doorway of the home. The man ignored commands from Las Vegas police officers and went back inside the house and shut the door. It appeared that the house was not yet on fire.
According to Fox News, when a SWAT team eventually entered the partially burned down home after the fire was extinguished, they found the bodies of the lieutenant, his wife and their son.
The Clark County Sheriff named Douglas Gillespie and did not identify the police officer or the family members right away, pending a positive identification and notifying next of kin.  However, Gillespie did say that the police officer was a 20 year veteran of the Las Vegas metropolitan Police department.
Boulder City, Nevada is about 20 miles southeast of Las Vegas therefore the investigation was being handled by the Henderson Police Department.
